If only I had this book 30 years ago when I began to read! Straight shooting from the hip. It really does read like a lovely talk with a friend who knows about tarot. It is an excellent book for beginners which will help them shake off beginners nerves. It is also an excellent book for experienced readers who may not have the chance to talk to other readers and to share experiences and tips. Not even a third of the way through and I felt my eyes welling up. "Yes, it is just like that!" Validation, empathy and fun all in a weekend read. Thanks Melissa for putting out into the universe your thoughts for the world to read. I did pick up some tips even after all these years!
This is an excellent book. Ms. Cynova writes in a very down to earth, in your face style that makes the process of learning tarot easy. She presents contemporary meanings to the cards making them much easier to remember. And you're not just getting keywords. No you're getting real life experience and stories that enhance the learning. I wish I had read this book years ago. I've struggled with memorization for years but her advice hit home for me and now when I look at a card I remember the story she told and I'm not stuck. I highly recommend this book.
I really love this book! It has been my go to since getting it and I love the way the writer talks with you thru the book. It honestly feels like she is speaking right to you. 5 stars.
I really liked this book, it was a fast and interesting read. Melissa has a way of making the whole process of learning the tarot seem less daunting and speaks to you like a friend. I would recommend this book to anyone starting to learn the Tarot, especially someone who is feeling overwhelmed with it. After deciding to learn to read the cards, then walking away from it for about a year, this book helped re-ignite my interest in picking it back up again (this time with a renewed energy). I cannot give this book 100% credit for that, but it absolutely played a part. This is not your tarot bible though. If you are looking for that I would suggest Joan Bunning's Learning the Tarot, or Liz Dean's Ultimate guide to tarot.
For the longest time, I never "got" tarot, but when I decided to give it another shot, this is the first book that was recommended by a professional tarot reader, so I bought it. I just wish I could have had this book years ago. Melissa has a unique no-nonsense, caring and helpful approach. Her choice of words or phrases has me chuckling from time to time, and I can imagine her saying those words to me as we sit at her kitchen table, talking tarot over of cup of tea. She is down-to-earth, savvy, witty, and knowledgeable, combined with a touch of sass. She can take a card that is difficult to understand and break down the meaning so it is incredibly understandable, and makes me wonder why others have not been saying the same thing. The deck she uses for illustrative purposes in the book is the Llewelyn Classic Tarot. I don't use that specific one, but everything she says in her book I can use with the decks I use, since they are based on the Rider Waite Smith tradition.I have already read it once and am almost through reading it for the second time, not only for the explanations but for the pure enjoyment of her writing style. Her real-life examples lend a more personal touch to it, and brings her messages home. I really can't say enough good things about the book and am awaiting her next project, which I heard about when someone interviewed her. If you are finding other tarot books lacking, you need to order this one!!
There isn’t much to say about this book that hasn’t already been addressed in the other reviews; It’s a great book. The only thing I’d like to reiterate is that she offers reversal meanings in a very handy way. She formatted the book in a way that makes this an easy reference during a reading — you can quickly flip to the page and pull out the answer without having to scour full paragraphs. Very well done and I appreciate the conversational style writing joined with the reference style lay-out.
I've decided to finally learn Tarot in-depth and bought this as an additional companion guide to a tarot set. Melissa Cynova is an engaging author, hilarious and a very informative teacher. This book held my attention and was finished in a few sittings, which is rare for me these days. She lays down the no-bs ethics and guidelines for tarot reading as a business, and provides a thorough guide to every card, featuring detailed photos of Llewellyn's Classic tarot deck. Suits and court cards are clearly organized. The section about the minor arcana is organized by the meaning of card numbers, which makes it easy to remember what they represent. The experience of being a tarot reader is told in an honest voice, with very sharp wit and humor. The profession can have serious and strange moments, but there's a significant impact on the lives of others. She is very gifted, and I'm glad she's sharing her knowledge with newbies and experienced readers alike. Get it! It's enjoyable and informative.
