But it's not JUST useful for parents of boys: I want to give this to every teacher and therapist I know, and even more, to every woman I know who is sometimes perplexed by her male colleagues.What I loved about Boys was how it connected the day-to-day challenges of working/living with boys and men to the big picture social phenomena like sports, video games and workplace dynamics. I felt like I was finally able to connect the dots between some of the crazy dynamics I've encountered and observed around boys in school, and the gendered politics of #MeToo, Brett Kavanagh etc. Plus it was just so much fun to read!Seriously, a great book for anyone who's interested in digging deeper than "boys will be boys" to understand what that means -- or more to the point, what it DOESN'T mean, but why we're so attached to the idea that it does.
I heard this "author" on NPR. Very Hateful. A male guest called on with his experience and she said he was wrong and than talked about historical male privilege. In her book, she wades around the shallow end of the intellectual integrity pool by ignoring the scientific literature and arguing that that gender is a social construct that is driven by external conditioning rather than genetics and biology. Given that Ms Giese has ignored the science there doesn't seem anything to recommend her text.Ironically, the more that books like this are published, the more I think of Adam Carolla's side of this discussion.
