I bought the author's first book, Call Me Tuesday, 3 days ago. I found it so well-written and compelling, that I stayed up all night reading it. As soon as I finished reading her first memoir, I immediately bought this one, Call Me Cockroach. I finished reading this second memoir this morning.I highly recommend both books... unless you are one of those people who had a golden childhood and you cannot imagine any parent, especially a mother, hating her precious little girl and violently abusing her, almost to the point of death. As for me, I do not have any doubts whatsoever about the truth of this story. I had a momster very much like Tuesday's. The details are different, but the pain and the deep psychological wounds are the same.Of the two books, I like this second one even better than the first. This book can definitely stand alone. However, to get the full effect of this one, I recommend reading Call Me Tuesday, first. One of the things that I love the best about Leigh's memoirs, especially when compared to others in this genre, is her amazing level of honesty about her own human imperfections. Wow... what can I say? I am blown away!I am so grateful to the author for writing her memoirs and sharing them with the world, so people like me can know that we aren't the only one... and to point the way to healing (as much as possible), and to a happy, fulfilling life. I am especially grateful, because I know how hard it is to put this kind of story in writing. I first tried to write a memoir when I was in my early twenties. Today I have a granddaughter in her early twenties, who is a graduate student at Harvard, and I am still trying to write my memoir.

Having read Ms. Byrne's first book (Call Me Tuesday), I knew the background story. I am so thankful she wrote this second half. Getting out of the abuse to her aunt's was a first step, but it was only a first step. Call Me Cockroach helps readers see the lasting impact the abuse had on her adult life, but rather than being a maudlin tale of "Woe is me!" it serves as inspiration that those who have been abused CAN overcome. It is by no means a sugar-coated or sacharine fairy tale; Ms. Byrne details her struggles and mistakes as well as her accomplishments. However, the matter-of-fact manner in which she reveals the challenges she's faced and both the positive and negative ways she's handled her adult life give evidence of her strength and determination. The message is clear: it isn't easy and it isn't pretty, but survivng IS possible.

Ms. Leigh Byrne,I'm so proud of you! Look how far you've come.. You're really just getting started. Keep writing, please! Your voice is so honest, it tugged on me, and I wept for you in so many relatable moments.I also suffer from childhood trauma, and I later found myself enmeshed in a classic narcissistic family of in-laws. Oh my god, I used to live with a Bobbi and Big Chad. It's literally been hell for nine years. But, now I'm free! To cope with this, I've been devouring anything in print. To be fair, I have not read Call Me Tuesday YET. I admit, I'm a little afraid to know exactly what The Mother did to you. I can't think of anything worse than brutalizing a child's soul. The betrayal wounds never completely go away, do they? They're threaded into our lives forever.I think usually people who've had similar life experiences either go one of two ways with these wounds. They simply buckle or transform their story. The former, well, you said it yourself, the prisons and mental hospitals can attest this theory. However, the latter individual realizes they posess the incredible power of helping countless others overcome. It is a beautiful, wonderful thing! Thank you.

Tuesday is truly a strong women to have gone through all that and prevailed. It must be extremely hard to grow up and being unable to trust the two most closet people to you, your mother and father. I give her a lot of credit for surviving all the abuse in her life and going on to still have a life of her own and not continue the cycle. I wish her much luck in her future.

Captivating story that is written in an honest raw way that is refreshing to hear. As a foster and adoptive mother I feel it's important to read stories like this that give me a glimpse into the flashbacks and PTSD a child with trauma experiences that carries into adulthood.

While it was somewhat comforting to read about an abuse survivor who has come through without allowing the experiences to destroy their life completely, I found the story telling a little matter-of-fact. I guess I was expecting more emotion to come through as catharsis.

I think this has got to be one of the BEST books I have ever read-EVER!!! The first book in this duo "Call Me Tuesday" is probably THE BEST book I've ever read with this one coming in a close second. While reading, I experienced so many emotions from hate with balled up fists to sadness and crying like a baby. I am usually a crime/drama/mystery type reader, and for once chose to go a slightly different route when this book and the first one appeared on my radar, and boy am I so glad I did. It definitely gave me a glimpse into a world I knew very little about-abuse, especially so graphically detailed through the eyes of the one who was abused. I refuse to refer to her as the "victim", she spent her whole adult life trying to escape the stigma of being a victim, that it just won't be right to call her that. Would highly, highly recommend this book and the first book to anyone, even those who typically don't enjoy reading.

this is a must read for everyoneone of the best books I've read. I read "Call Me Tuesday" first, then this is the followup. Can not believe that parents can treat their kids like this. She certainly deserves happiness the rest of her life. I thank God that my parents never treated any of us like this. God bless you Leigh. You would never ever think of bullying anyone after reading these 2 books.
