A person gets through nine books that are reasonably well written only to, at last, end up with a cliff hanger ending. This is an unpardonable sin committed by authors on their readers to leave an opening to sell more books.
You have spacefaring technology in an all out war with aliens. And your Fleet Marines are armed with only pistols and rifles that seemingly take forever to kill with. And the aliens have plasma blasters that can cut through almost anything.......nobody ever capture an alien and their weapons?But I am a student of the fine art of small arms use, manufacturing, and design so I'm always expecting these kinds of details.The story is entertaining and the character development is good. The author has a good grasp of the rules of order and command that are the backbone of all military units, and does a good job of illustrating the usual wrongheadedness and sometimes stupidity of the upper echelons of any command structure.And then at the end James, you committed a fatal error to my mind. That being the set up for new series of books. Far far too many authors feel the need to leave stories open-ended as a means to generate new sales from essentially sequels. Sometimes I feel it would be best to bring the story to a solid conclusion.
I got this book series because it was nine books series for $0.99. I knew nothing about the author or series but I got it taking a chance on it and I'm enjoying it so far. I've already read through 1 & 2 and I'm on book 3 now.It's an action science fiction book series with a character that is book out of place in the environment he's been put in but gifted to handle his own. Get the whole series. Each book reads like pieces of a long great action novel. This box set completes the whole story for me.
I enjoyed this series immensely, the story line was easy to follow and I found myself fully immersed to the extent that I had read through all the books quickly and found myself looking for more. I hope the Author has more to add to the story as it left me wondering where it could go next consequently wanting more.
I was pleasantly surprised by the series, fast-paced action, and best of all, no graphic sex or profanity that increasing numbers of writers feel is necessary for "realism". Some novels I've seen have more "F-bombs" dropped in them than a carpet-bombing attack from a B-52 bomber. I would have given it 5 stars except that the author killed a character in one of his books and then accidentally listed the same character in the next one. Oops......... Good series though, I'd recommend it.
This series was an engaging quick read. I enjoyed the characters, though some are not developed as fully as others, you have enough to buy into the main characters. I am grateful that though there is plenty of grit, there is no vulgarity. Alternate form word is used so I found no offensive languahe.Great read, loking forward to reading more from this author!
I have thoroughly enjoyed these books. I could hardly put them down. I am looking forward to reading the continuation of this series and recommend it to anyone that enjoys science fiction books.
Jack Forge and the team of Jame David Victor, author(s), were all new to me. I love military sci-fi and this proved to be a very worthwhile series. I blazed through the nine-volume box set pretty quickly. About a week or so I think. You will love it if you are a fan of this genre.
