Black Flags, Blue Waters was fascinating! My mental picture of the late 1600s and early 1700s is now rich with dozens of pirate ships chasing merchant ships, pirates of all backgrounds, early Americans hungry to import goods, bloody murder, and peace-keeping strategies. When finished, I wanted to hear more stories about pirate ships and and the surprising organization of the large numbers of men who sailed and rowed them (or sank, or burnt, or wrecked them). One of the fun aspects of reading Dolin’s books is you learn a lot about many topics, as the stories carry you along. Dolin’s writing style and use of words was enjoyable as well: “Every culture and country whose ships have dipped a paddle or oar into the salty brine, or raised a sail to harness the wind, has contended with what the Greek poet Homer called sea-wolves raiding at will, who risk their lives to plunder other men”.

I have read quite a few books on Pirates that were very good so I got excited when I found out about this book (about 2 weeks before it was released). It did not disappoint and I think Black Flags, Blue Waters is my new favorite book on the subject. The author really ties the pirates in with colonies which I enjoyed, a different direction from past books on pirates. Eric Jay Dolin is a very good writer and really brings everything to life. The only bad thing is I’ve already finished it. I guess I’ll just have to reread it a little down the road.

...until you read Black Flags, Blue Waters by Eric Jay Dolin! Expertly researched and interestingly told, Black Flags disabuses you of almost all you thought you knew about pirates. Yes, the book is filled with illustrations and maps telling the story with colorful vignettes and anecdotes bringing these men and their dramatic circumstance alive. Far more important and unexpected though is their intersection with early/pre-America when it was pirate 'treasure' that bolstered our budding economy. Well covered were early politicians who would on occasion divert from their Christian values and mores to cooperate and even collaborate with fundamentally evil men. The book is astounding and robustly noted, providing new source material of a subject treated far too romantically in history until now. Great book whether you're a reader, fan or researcher.

Black Flags, Blue Waters captures the exploits, effrontery, and evils of the pirates that once sailed the Atlantic. With the ear of a seasoned story-teller, and the skill of a careful historian, Eric Jay Dolin has produced a book that is exciting and careful. He sifts through legend to arrive, as best as one can, at truth. While readers can thrill over the larger-than-life personalities of the pirates depicted in this book, they will find much more in its pages. Dolin carefully presents the contexts for the pirates, diplomatic twists and turns, changes in markets, and much more. I was surprised by how goodly a number of these pirates managed to avoid paying the wages for their sins – some transitioned from pirates to privateers; others suddenly dropped out of the trade. Then, again, a goodly number of them had their necks stretched. If you are looking for a reliable and enticing book on pirates, Black Flags, Blue Waters has your name on its masthead.

This is a pretty good book. It’s the book you expect it to be. It’s well researched and extremely thorough. You really do get a feel for what life was like in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean ports where pirates were based. You learn about the “Golden Age” of piracy. You learn what life was like on board their ships. You learn a great deal about their governance and inter-relationships. The details of ships’ hulls, rigging, and sailplans are all there. The booty, the rum, the sea fights, the trade routes, the wrecks; they’re all there too. Toward the end are the trials and the hangings. Quite a few hangings, actually, interspersed with the sermons of preachers hoping to spare the pirates’ souls as they faced their maker. For the reader interested in following up with independent study, there are forty-six pages of footnotes and three of bibliography. Unfortunately, the author relays all of this information in a monotone which underserves the topic. His is a voice which drones on and on. Even gunpowder and whores fail to register above a hum. To his credit, the author is effective in conveying his empathy for the African slaves which often counted as pirate chattel, and the slave trade is accurately portrayed as savagely inhumane. Overall, the prose may not be clever, but it’s still a pretty good book.
