If you want dynamic, believable characters, engaging dialog, and a plot line that grabs you "by the short hairs" and doesn't let go, you'll love this book.You want to see a good kid who joined the police force to drives his family nuts stumble into impossible situations and get himself back out using trial and error? You'll love this book.You want to see the good guys win, even if they make a few mistakes along the way? You'll love this book.If you fancy yourself an English Lit teacher who needs to critique everything you read? This book will drive you nuts; go pick up some poetry and spare us all your outrage.I have been an avid W.B.B. Griffin fan since I was old enough to read adult-level books. That being said, this series is not one of his better one's in my opinion.Every author has a time line slip here and there or a random detail change, especially with a long series. This series is a folly of them, with characters randomly changing ages several times within the same volume as well as throughout the series, magically jumping from the 1970s to 2003 in a six month period of time. If you are a stickler for that sort of thing, don't try this series out.Since I have read the whole series, several volumes more than once, I am obviously not one of those people. ;)
W.E.B. Griffin nee` Bill Butterworth is a great writer. I have been a fan of his books since I first discovered his books with the "Brotherhood of Warl". Since I have a Kindle, I will pre-order his books because I am anxiously waiting for the next book in a series. His weaving of real people into his stories is great and from what I have learned about many of the people that he brings in to his books is probably how they would have reacted in the scenario that is portrayed in the book. I have enjoyed all of the books that he has written using his "nom de plume" of Griffin.
Good book but during the latter portion of the book there were several editing problems. This bothers me when I read incorrect words that were not caught. For instance, the word should have been "take" and it was "lake" in several sentences.
After you read a couple of these books in series you begin to relate to the characters presented by Mr. Griffin. Quite an accurate accounting of police work in the 70's, including the mindset of law enforcement during that era. Mr. Griffin expounds on quite a few subjects that law enforcement officers would find basic, but those who have never policed may find very interesting.Good reads!
I've enjoyed the series, but this book was a let down. Very slow placing. Much of the book was a reintroduction of characters and events from the series. I'll try book 5 and hope for a better result.
If you read my review on, "The Victim," the third book in the, "Badge of Honor," series, you will notice that this review on, "The Witness," is a near repeat. That's because each book in the series feels like a continuation of the previous book.If you liked another book in the "Badge of Honor" series, you will like this one. The writing is fast, smooth, and engaging, the kind where it feels effortless and exciting to read. The pages move fast. You hate to see the book end.I'm certain that the book would be great as a stand-alone since the author recalls previous events as needed to provide necessary historical context. But, I especially enjoyed reading, "The Witness," after just having read, "The Victim," which was the previous book in the series.My introduction to the "Badge of Honor" series was, "The Vigilantes," which is the tenth book in the series. I liked it so much that I decided to start the series from the beginning (well, I chose, "Special Operations," as my starting point). So far, each book in the series feels just like opening another page of the previous book. You are immersed from the first paragraph because you already know everybody and you know their stories up to that point. I already have the series' fifth book, "The Assassin," which follows, "The Witness," lined up in my Kindle. I can't wait to get to it!
Another great read in the series.
I have enjoyed reading all of the Badge of Honor series. The 'redevelopment' of the main characters in each book is a bit tedious, but I understand the need if someone is only reading that one book.
