Review

Praise for SELLING WATER BY THE RIVER: "Really profound...helpful...inspiring." (Rob Bell, Author of Love Wins)"There are, in Hipps' SELLING, a sturdiness and brilliance and simplicity of theology and an accessible and God-drenched grace that make it the humblest, clearest, most comfortably compelling statement yet of the difference between "religious Christianity" and the Jesus way. In sum, this is one of the most instructive and pastoral books I have read in the last ten years and, Lord knows, one of the most needed." (Phyllis Tickle, Lecturer on Religion in America and Author of Emergence Christianity: What it Is, Where it is Going, and Why it Matters)"Shane Hipps brings us news that is too good not to be true: that what we thought we had to wait for, work for, strive for, reach for, fight for, die for, earn, learn, master, or attain is actually already a gift fully given in the present of this moment, graciously and freely ours if only we would awaken to it. This book not only offers us this good news with great clarity and delight; it also helps us-gently, wisely, simply, and profoundly-to be roused and raised into that blessed state of awe and awakening." (Brian D. McLaren, author of Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? (www.brianmclaren.net))"Masterfully weaving story, metaphor, and scripture into a tapestry, Shane Hipps puts his finger on something we all long for: a connection with the Divine. SELLING WATER BY THE RIVER will be a wonderful discovery for the many people who feel that true spirituality has been corrupted by culture and religion." (Tony Jones (tonyj.net) is a theologian and the author of many books, including The New Christians)"This book is one of the flare-ups from that religionless Christianity that more and more is breaking out in our world. Some of us will flee from what Shane Hipps tries to tell us in this book. Others will find what he has to say helpful in their efforts to live out the Jesus lifestyle in the landscape of a post-modern world. Whatever your reactions might be you will find the words on these pages cannot be ignored." (Tony Campolo, Eastern University)"Shane Hipps manages to take your beliefs and assumptions about God and the Bible and artfully, yet mercilessly wrings them out, leaving behind whatever drips to the floor, (the things that never belonged in there anyhow), then shakes them out and shows them to you again now free from what had clung to them -and before you is something beautiful, true, new and familiar." (Nadia Bolz-Weber, Founding Pastor, House for all Sinners and Saints)"Shane Hipps offers us a compelling and life-giving reminder that the work and life of Jesus is not identical to what we know to be Christianity. Without falling into cynicism or mere critique Shane invites us to encounter a wild ride with Jesus. The fruit of reconsidering the gospel in light of full humanity-his and our own-is like being given a refreshing IPA after a long dusty hike. Let the breath of God blow you into new wonder and hope." (Dan B. Allender, Ph.D., Professor of Counseling Psychology and Founding President, The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology)

If someone wants a book that describes a Christianity that is accessible and has integrity when it comes to scholarly criticism and the recent American trend of church disenchantment, I'll recommend this book.I thought it would be about church (god is the river, "christian institutions" are the people who bottle the water) but it's not. That is a metaphor the author uses, but instead of focusing on those bottling the water, he instead chooses to talk about the river and how it is accessible to everyone. Jesus even told his enemies (Pharisees) when they asked where the kingdom of heaven was that it was within them! (Luke 17:20-21)There are lots of metaphors, lots of stuff which helps those of us in post-evangelicalism trying to discard those beliefs we held which were not historically valid, those beliefs which were based on fear/worry etc. To be sure, it is a popular work written to be very accessible, so he does not go into those particular issues, but the "Christianity" which he presents, my life experiences and my studies have no problems with.If you are an evangelical, you may read this and disagree with a lot of it. Shane hipps and rob bell are/were buddies. Based on my understanding they fit together in the same camp. As with rob bell, this is written with a lot of the questions evangelicals would pose in mind, so if you are alien to the evangelical culture there may be a bit of disconnect between what's written and what you are wondering about.I've had a hard time calling myself a Christian lately, but this book presents a vision that I believe reflects what Jesus intended which is likely not concerned with a label such as "Christian" at all... *I reserve the right to change my opinion!

.with this book, Seth joins a roster of new and fresh and astonishing voices (Rob Bell, Peter Rollins, Cynthia Bourgeault, Ilia Delio, James Alison, Catherine Keller, Richard Rohr, etc) whose writings are not only clearing the clutter in the boat that is the stalled christian religion, but also are providing better navigating skills, so that the vessel is lighter and swifter and able to enter A Truly New Course towards territories yet to be discovered.Seth's exposition of Jesus's first miracle is emblematic of his whole book.here's Jesus at a wedding party that has been going strong for six days; lots of drinking has taken place already.AND Jesus goes off with his miracle in a way that is so subversive and delightful, that even today, most believers fail to recognize its world-upside-down message: he helps keep the buzz going extravagantly by turning the water in the SIX BIG JARS, filled to the brim; not asking that they fill the smaller ones meant to hold wine.WOW!BUT it gets better, these big jars held the water for Ritual Cleansing.which can only direct our attention that in HIM, there's a new way to do that, one that we've been too slow and too cautious to follow its resonance all the way through; out of the numerous interpretation of this outrageous act, it might mean that the way out of our world and into his world is both difficult and enigmatic but it MUST include ecstatic delight, or it is not his way at all!..

This book is worth reading and it made me think about how I view my christianity. The way Shane talked about lenses reminded me of Wayne Jacobsen and his ideas on the Jesus lens. If we all view life through some sort of lens, then Shanes' idea that even Jesus had a lens through which HE looked at life should be important to us. He says that the lens Jesus looked through was "love God and love your neighbor as your self". In any action or word we use if they do not show love for God and our neighbor then we should not say those words or do those actions. I also liked the way he used his life and metaphors in explaining new ways to look at life and the bible.fePros Written with very short chapters and was easy to readCons None

Really like this book hope theres more like it...

Phipps does a great job of teaching people what it is to follow Jesus without the constraints or added dogma that come along with religion. One of the most important things is that he does so in a way that does not come off as offensive or patronizing.

If there's one book you could commit to reading this year that will challenge and encourage you, and speak to your spirit, this is the one.

After moving back home in 2002 our family attended the church where I grew up for about 6 months before being asked to find a different church because we just didn't fit in. For years the hurt and bitterness was.terrible. Out children reacted in different ways. None of the particularly wonderful, two teen pregnancies a drug addiction and an atheist just to name some of the repercussionsI am so very thankful for that experience ... It allowed us to discover our thirst for the Living Water, without the constraints of church politics ... Thank you Shane Hipps for putting it all into such beautiful words!

Shane's perspective has given me renewed faith in the river within me. Christ is alive and well, inside my heart, flowing daily to sustain and strengthen me. Focus on the water not which store to buy it! Outstanding.
