The Minor Prophets: A Commentary on Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, by Thomas Edward McComiskey

From the Back Cover

With their messages of doom and judgment, the Minor Prophets have not been popular subjects in the history of biblical interpretation. In this exegetical and expository commentary, noted scholars remedy this neglect by offering an authoritative, evangelical treatment on the prophets. This volume, the third of three, features commentary by J. Alec Motyer (Zephaniah and Haggai), Thomas McComiskey (Zechariah), and Douglas Stuart (Malachi). The authors not only provide meticulous exegesis of the Hebrew text but also relate the message of the ancient prophets to contemporary life in practical and meaningful ways.Praise for The Minor Prophets"Although written from an evangelical perspective, not one of the volumes shies away from critical questions, making it a useful book for both the academic scholar and the minister in the local congregation."--S. D. Snyman, Old Testament Essays"The information in this book will help in any serious study of an often neglected segment of the Bible."--Dianne Bergant, CSA, The Bible Today"Its combination of attention given to technical and expositional issues makes it one of the best sets on this part of the Old Testament."--Michael A. Grisanti, Master's Seminary Journal"Preachers and teachers will find the 'nuts and bolts' analysis of the Hebrew text in this commentary to be helpful for their tasks."--Robert R. Ellis, Review and Expositor"A worthwhile investment both for the interested and knowledgeable layperson as well as the intermediate-level student."--Ronald L. Androphy, Hebrew Studies"Overall, this is probably the best exegetical commentary on these books for the pastor's study."--John F. Brug, Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly"This volume is a solid resource for both student and pastor. It provides a demonstration of what evangelical scholarship can do as it honestly wrestles with the text."--Gerald Wheeler, Andrews University Seminary Studies

The most important part ... these books are out of print. The second most important part is that they are, without question, the very best commentaries of the Minor Prophets that I've ever run into. There are 2 ways to acquire McComisky's Minor Prophet's.The first way is to buy this printing volume by volume to collect the 3 volume set. That's how I started. You will quickly find that as you are ready for Vol. 3, the price spikes outrageously if it's available at all. Not that the first 2 volumes are inexpensive. The second way is to acquire Minor Prophets, The: An Exegetical and Expository Commentary I finally found one from a seminary bookstore in Saskatchewan about 10 Google pages into the search. This printing has the 3 volumes in one book. So, I was frankly unable to find the 3rd volume. I searched the web a couple hours over a couple days and made phone calls. Sellers advertise it but then don't have it at checkout. The Minor Prophets is an amazing deep dive study experience.

This is by far the best commentary I've ever read. I was a Bible student and read through dozens of different commentaries by who knows how many authors and this is the one that stands out to me. I don't know why it costs so much right now. I'd love to say it's worth the money, but $700 bucks for a commentary is probably not your cup of tea unless you have the money to blow. If you do, blow it on this. Because of this commentary, the minor prophets came alive to me for the first time. Before I read them I had the typical view of the minor prophets as doom and gloom, and this commentary opened my eyes to the message of grace that is the backdrop to the message for all the minor prophets. This is crucial to understanding how God really views sin, condemnation, and punishment. They are never without a message of Grace and should not be preached as though they were. I wish it were cheaper so more people could partake.

This is the best, most thorough commentary I have ever used. It still has a lot of Hebrew, but it is not so heavy laden with it that a person of limited Hebrew skills may still easily use it. This is a very thorough handling of the 12 Minor Prophets. It is a great resource for both the exegetical and expository information. I would agree with other comments that the emphasis of God's grace is very refreshing as it is balanced between God's judgment and the blessings He still bestows on His people. This book is very readable! I did not pay the expensive price others did- my copy cost just under $100.00 new from BGBOOKS77. Although the book is well worth a lot more if you are planning to seriously teach or preach from any of the Minor Prophets. This commentary also does a great job of bringing in quotes from other ancient texts to add clarity to the culture of the time or common practices, such as the common way of expressing concepts in writing that are not common for us today but was at that time. All of this is done without compromising the message of the prophet or confusing the Word of God.

I've only read the commentaries on a couple of minor prophets in this book, but I assume the rest of the commentaries follow suit..I don't know Hebrew, so I can't comment on the comments on the Hebrew. After an introduction to each minor prophet with a discussion on the author, date, theme, etc., the commentator's translation of the book is shown in parallel with the NASB. From there the commentary is divided in two sections which run in parallel: one section with translator's notes and discussions of the Hebrew words and tenses, and one section which is comparable to a "traditional" commentary with references to other verses, information on the culture and context, literary structure, pastor's notes, etc.I'm very happy with this book and am looking forward to learning Hebrew, and am looking forward to understanding the commentary on the original language! I recommend this to anyone interested in the Word of God who doesn't mind carrying heavy books.

This book is worth the money. It includes all the minor prophets. All of the contributors refer to recent archaeological finds and to the influence of the literature of of the surrounding nations. My complaint is that all of the contributors consider the Christian Church to be the fulfillment of the eschatological prophecies. This is not fair to the prophets. The prophets prophesy that in the latter day the Jews will be secure in their homeland, the Jewish law will be supreme, and Gentiles will seek out the Jewish religion. The contributors to this book feel those prophecies were fulfilled by a religion that saw the Jews chased out of their homeland and that declared the Mosaic law to no longer be in force. I would like to read a commentary that shows respect for what the Minor Prophets were trying to say, even though it is obvious they were too optimistic about the future.

I recently preached through and wrote a seminary paper on Jonah. I found this commentary to be very helpful and concise. I have not read anything outside of Jonah but I do feel that the introductory material was a little skimpy (about 10 pages) and did not hit all the major issues with enough detail. Genre, a massive issue for the book with huge implications for interpretation and exposition, was only touched on for 2 paragraphs. Baldwin seems to take a parabolic rather than historical view.As a poor seminoid, this is the most expensive single volume I have ever owned. I guess for $400 bucks I was expecting it to preach my sermons for me! Regardless, I can only speak for Jonah but McComisky does appear to be one of the most comprehensive volumes on the Minor Prophets you can find, a must-have for a serious student of the Twelve. Were it not so expensive, I would give it 5 stars.

McComiskey's 3-volume set on the "minor prophets" is outstanding, the best I have read. The exegesis is carefully done within the historical context and with a high view of biblical inspiration. The insights offered are rich, bringing out the many wonderful word-plays that the English reader misses. All three of these volumes are well worth their price.
